Anyway, I thought it would be fun to share a few of the photos here. :)
This photograph of my Great-Grandpa William's home in New Zealand was taken more than 100 years ago.
Grandpa William was born in Dunedin on N.Z.'s South Island in 1880. From what we've been told of him, he had a very adventurous nature.
Around the age of 18 years old he voluntarily enlisted in the army and was sent to South Africa as part of the New Zealand contingent to fight for the British in the Anglo-Boer War.
When his war service was over he returned to New Zealand but he had fallen in love with Africa and as soon as he was able he came back to South Africa and here he spent the rest of his life. He helped to construct most of the main dams in South Africa, working mainly as a rigger, so he was usually among the first to arrive at the site where the dam was to be built and amongst the last to leave when it was completed.

He was also a hunter and went on many expeditions and safaris. He was an excellent tracker and could "read sign" very well, so much so that he helped the police at times to solve crimes. He was an amature naturalist and artist and had many interests and hobbies.
He remained a bachelor until he met and fell in love with my Great-Grandmother, Frances. He was 18 years older than her. They had a happy marriage and two children were born to them, a girl and a boy. The boy being my Grandpa Edwin (Eddie), my mom's dad. :)

One of Grandpa William's hobbies was butterfly-collecting and in the photo above he (right) and Grandpa Eddie are looking at some of the collections.
Sadly Jessica and I never got to meet either Grandpa's William or Eddie as they had both passed on by the time we were born. We feel we do know them though through the stories and letters and photographs, of course, that have been passed down to us from our Gran and Mom and other family members. :)

These pictures are absolutely beautiful! I especially love the one of your great grandmother holding your grandfather Eddie.

Dear Miss Rachel,
What a beautiful post and special tribute to your family! Photographs are so wonderful...reminders of very special people and special moments.
My son, Joshua, told us about your blog and said that I might want to stop over for a visit. What a lovely spot you live in! Certainly much different from snowy New England!
It is always so encouraging for us when we meet other believers...to see God's Word being shared all over the world...such a blessing. You have a lovely blog...and it is especially so nice to see how much the Lord means to you and your family!
May you and your family have a very blessed week!
Mrs. Laura (Joshua's mom!)
Oh this is so awesome! Beautiful photos. ♥
xo.
Emy - Thank you! The photo of Gr-Granny Frances & Grandpa Eddie as a baby is also one of my favourites. :)
Mrs Laura - Thank you for visiting our blog and for your lovely comment!
Kinsey - Thanks Kins, glad you liked the photos. :)
God bless,
Rachel
Wow - such lovely treasures from the past. It's good that you're preserving them by scanning them into the computer - I think I must tell my mother to do the same to all her old photos.
God Bless,
Felicity
P.S. Thank you for the birthday wishes!
This is incredible... and right up my alley. As a family historian, I can't help but be awed by your photos. What a treasure! The quality is excellent!
Hi Rachel!
What a coincidence! Our family has recently been sorting through old photographs, scanning them in, and making copies for family members as well! How funny :)
I really like the last photo of your grandpas looking at the butterfly display - I like to collect butterflies and insects too. :) It looks like he had some lovely specimens!
I also love the photo of your great grandma in the garden with her baby - so lovely!
I hope you are all well and I hope you're having a wonderful day!
With lots of love
from Laura
These photos are amazing! Few people have such a collection of lovely family photos. I very much love the picture with the horse and the python. Photos of your family with animals is much more rare than just photos of your family members.
Sr Felicity, Elizabeth Ellen & Stephanie Ann - Thank you for your nice comments! :) Stephanie, I didn't know that old photos with pets/animals are rare - that's interesting!
Laura - Wow, that is a coincidence! :) I think putting the photos on the PC and discs is a good idea - but it can be a slow process, but well-worth it in the end. Thank you for commenting. I trust that you and your family are also well. We're all well on this side.:)
God bless,
Lots of love,
Rachel
OOHHH....I *LOVE* those old pics!!!
They are so neat! Thanks for sharing!
Good Afternoon Miss Rachel,
Thank you for stopping by my blog the other day and making a comment. I really like the photos you posted here, especially the one with the python (very cool). Considering how old the photos are, they look to be in great shape.
I can relate to what you wrote in this post. I never got to meet my grandfather (and neither really did my father because my grandfather passed away when my father was about 8 months old). Still, we always have the stories and the photos. Even though I have never meet my grandfather, I feel like I truly know him.
God Bless,
Josh
Alison - Thank you for taking time to comment, I'm glad you liked the pictures. :)
Josh - Thank you for your comment.
Fortunately many of the family photos have been well taken care of, though some are quite brittle now. A lot of the older ones have a thick cardboard backing and I think that's helped to preserve them.
God bless,
Rachel
Hey, I really enjoyed these! Old photographs are so neat... :)
